Smarta refers to adherents who follow the Vedas and Shastras. Smarta is a vriddhi derivation of Smriti or religious texts derived from Vedic scriptures. Smartas follow the Advaita Vedanta philosophy of Adi Shankara. They speak Kannada and Sanskrit. The Smarta community has been very particular in carrying down through ages the two vocal tradition viz the Vedas and Sangeeta. Smartas celebrate major Hindu festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Deepavali, Navaratri, Sankranti, Madhwanavami, Janmashtami, Ugadi, Ramanavami and Hanuman Jayanthi.
